The Year-End Hotel Status Playbook: Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt & IHG (2026)

If you want to keep elite status in 2027, December 31 is the date that matters. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards all close their 2026 elite year that day, and whatever you have earned by then decides how you are treated at check-in for all of next year.

Most travelers we talk to are loyal to one or two of these programs, not all four. So this playbook is split by brand. Skip straight to yours below: each section covers the tiers that are actually worth keeping and the realistic ways to requalify before the deadline.

How to keep elite status before December 31, 2026 for Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG

2026 Status Deadlines at a Glance

All four programs close their 2026 elite year on December 31. What differs is how long the status you earn lasts and when each Q4 bonus ends.

ProgramStatus lasts throughQ4 2026 bonus
Marriott BonvoyFebruary 2028More at Resorts: 1,500–4,500 points per stay of 2+ nights, until Nov 22 (register by Nov 13)
Hilton HonorsMarch 31, 2028More Points to Play: 1,000–3,000 points per stay, Oct 15 – Dec 31
World of HyattFebruary 29, 20283,000 points every 3 nights, until Dec 15 (up to 36,000)
IHG One RewardsDecember 31, 20272X–3X points from your second stay, Oct 1 – Dec 31

Three Rules for Keeping Elite Status in Any Program

Whichever program you are loyal to, three things hold true at this time of year.

  1. Promotion bonus points don’t count toward status. Only nights, stays, eligible spend or base points do. A Q4 promotion is a nice rebate on nights you need anyway, not a shortcut.
  2. Register before your next stay. Nights completed before you register for a promotion earn no bonus, and there is no way to add them afterward.
  3. Leave yourself time. If you plan to fill a gap with booked nights, they are scheduled like normal stays, about one per calendar day. A 30-night gap started on December 10 simply won’t finish.

As a rough guide, this is when to start if you are filling the gap with booked nights. The dates leave a 10-day buffer before December 31.

Keep Marriott elite status: 2026 year-end timeline for Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador

Marriott Tiers Worth Keeping

Below Platinum, Marriott status is mostly a points bonus and a later checkout. Platinum is where your stays start to feel different, so that is the line most members are protecting.

TierWhat you need in 2026What you get in 2027
Platinum50 nights50% bonus points, lounge access and breakfast, 4 p.m. checkout
Titanium75 nights75% bonus points, 48-hour room guarantee, United MileagePlus Premier Silver
Ambassador100 nights + $23,000 qualifying spendA dedicated Ambassador and Your24 flexible check-in

Status you earn in 2026 runs through February 2028. Reaching 50 nights in 2026 also earns an Annual Choice Benefit, and 75 nights earns a second one. Benefits vary by brand, though: lounge access and lounge breakfast apply at brands that have lounges, and 4 p.m. checkout is subject to availability at resort and convention hotels.

How to Keep Marriott Elite Status

First, check the elite night count in your Bonvoy app. It already includes your annual night credits from US co-brand cards, which usually post early in the year. Each card adds 5 to 25 credits, and one personal card can be combined with one business card. For example, a Brilliant (25) plus a Business card (15) gives you 40 elite night credits before you travel at all. The app shows what you have earned so far, so your gap is your target, such as 50 nights for Platinum, minus that number.

If you still have trips this fall, the More at Resorts promotion makes them work a little harder: paid stays of two nights or more earn 1,500 bonus points, plus 3,000 more at participating resorts, through November 22. Registration closes November 13, and our Marriott More at Resorts guide has the details.

It is also worth knowing that in early 2026, Marriott moved members who missed requalifying down just one tier rather than resetting them. That was a policy, not a promise for next year, and one tier below Platinum is Gold, without the lounge or breakfast.

When there is no travel left, this is where we usually help. Our Marriott Mattress Run posts qualifying nights to your account from $45.50 a night, with no travel on your part, and because they are real posted nights they also count toward the 50-night Annual Choice Benefit. If you are a long way off, Instant Marriott Platinum is set up on a new account and valid until February 2028. Aiming for Ambassador? Marriott Qualifying Spend covers the spend side.

Finally, a simple way to decide: multiply the nights you are short by the cost per night, then compare it with what a year of breakfast and lounge access is worth to you.

Hilton Honors

Hilton Honors 2026 year-end timeline: Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve requirements before December 31

Hilton Tiers Worth Keeping

This year, Hilton made status easier to reach. Gold dropped from 40 nights to 25, Diamond from 60 to 50, and eligible spend replaced base points as a third way to qualify.

TierWhat you need in 2026What you get in 2027
Gold25 nights, 15 stays or $6,000 eligible spend80% bonus points, room upgrades, F&B credit or breakfast
Diamond50 nights, 25 stays or $11,500 eligible spend100% bonus points, executive lounge access, premium Wi-Fi
Diamond Reserve80 nights or 40 stays, plus $18,000 eligible spend120% bonus points, confirmable upgrade, 4 p.m. checkout

Status earned in 2026 lasts through March 31, 2028.

How to Keep Hilton Elite Status

Open the Hilton Honors app and look at all three counters: nights, stays and eligible spend. Gold and Diamond need only one of them, so the closest one is your real target. For many frequent travelers that turns out to be stays, because short one-night stays move that counter fastest. One catch: Hilton counts consecutive nights at the same hotel as a single stay, even if you check out and back in. To add stays, use different hotels or leave a night in between.

Two things are different this year. Rollover nights are gone, so anything beyond your target won’t carry into 2027. And the More Points to Play promotion runs right up to December 31, paying 1,000 bonus points per stay, or 3,000 at listed luxury, lifestyle and resort hotels. Our Hilton Q4 2026 guide walks through it.

If you are short and out of trips, our Hilton Mattress Run can post either nights ($45.50 each) or stays ($48.50 each), so you can fill whichever counter is closer. For bigger gaps, Instant Hilton Diamond and Instant Hilton Gold work on existing accounts and run for 365 days from activation. Diamond Reserve always needs $18,000 in spend, which our Hilton Qualifying Spend service can cover.

Either way, price both your nights gap and your stays gap before you decide. They are often more different than you would expect.

World of Hyatt

World of Hyatt 2026 Globalist timeline: Q4 promo dates and the December 31 deadline

The Hyatt Tier Worth Keeping: Globalist

With Hyatt it really comes down to one tier. The lower tiers are pleasant, but Globalist is the status people plan their year around.

  • What you need: 60 tier-qualifying nights or 100,000 base points in 2026 (bonus points don’t count).
  • What you get: daily breakfast, club lounge access where the hotel has one, upgrades including standard suites, 4 p.m. checkout (subject to availability at resorts and casino hotels), waived resort fees and free parking on award stays.
  • Bonus at 60 nights: a Milestone Reward that includes a Category 1–7 Free Night Award and two Suite Upgrade Awards.
  • Valid through: February 29, 2028.

How to Keep Hyatt Elite Status

First, check both counters in the app: tier-qualifying nights and base points. Reaching either one is enough. If you hold a World of Hyatt card, night credits from card spending can take up to eight weeks to show up, but they still count toward the year you spent the money.

Hyatt’s Q4 offer pays 3,000 bonus points for every three nights through December 15, up to 36,000 points, so it pays to think in threes. It ends about two weeks before the status deadline, though. The details are in our Hyatt Q4 2026 guide.

Then, to fill a gap without traveling, our Hyatt Mattress Run posts qualifying nights from $53.50 each, and those nights count toward the 60-night milestone too.

Instant Hyatt Globalist is a different route, and it is only for members below Globalist today. If that is you and you are far from 60 nights, it combines Hyatt’s Globalist Challenge with the 20 qualifying nights the challenge requires. If you already hold Globalist, it can’t be used to extend your status, so qualifying nights are the way to keep it. Hyatt accepts challenge registrations until December 31 and gives you 90 days from registration to finish. Even so, we suggest ordering by around November 10. That date is our own scheduling buffer, not a Hyatt deadline: processing takes 25–30 days, and the extra weeks cover posting delays and the holiday rush. It also isn’t available if your account has registered for a Hyatt challenge in the past three years.

Not requalifying, but have one special trip left? A Guest of Honor Award brings Globalist benefits to a single stay of up to seven nights.

IHG One Rewards

IHG One Rewards 2026 year-end timeline: Platinum, Diamond and Club Lounge night targets

IHG Tiers Worth Keeping

At IHG, the line that matters is Platinum. For many members, however, the real prize is the Club Lounge, which works a little differently from the tiers themselves.

TierWhat you need in 2026What you get in 2027
Platinum40 nights or 60,000 qualifying points60% bonus points, room upgrades, 72-hour room guarantee
Diamond70 nights or 120,000 qualifying points100% bonus points, breakfast amenity, Diamond support
Annual Lounge Membership40 or 70 nights (nights only)Club Lounge access for you plus one guest

The lounge is a Milestone Reward you choose at 40 or 70 nights, and points don’t unlock it. Status earned in 2026 lasts through December 31, 2027.

How to Keep IHG Elite Status

First, compare your nights with your qualifying points in the IHG app. IHG lets you qualify either way, so if you are closer on points, that is often the easier path. If the lounge is what you are after, focus on nights.

IHG’s Q4 promotion runs through December 31 and pays 2X points from your second stay, or 3X when you book in the IHG One Rewards app. Our IHG Q4 2026 guide has the fine print.

We offer two ways to fill an IHG gap: a Qualifying Night ($39.90) when you need nights, and a Qualifying Night with 5,000 points ($76.50) when you are closer on points. If you are not Platinum yet, the IHG Platinum Challenge gets you there after five nights. Our IHG Elite Status guide covers the full tier breakdown if you want to dig deeper.

Keep Elite Status: FAQ

Do mattress run nights count toward milestone rewards?

Yes. They post to your account as paid qualifying nights, so they count toward night-based milestones the same way a business trip would. Status on its own works differently: milestone rewards follow the qualifying nights that actually post, not the tier you hold. Instant Hyatt Globalist, for example, includes the 20 qualifying nights Hyatt’s challenge requires. Those nights count, but 20 nights won’t reach the 60-night Milestone Reward by themselves.

Can I still requalify after the promotions end?

Yes. Every program counts qualifying activity through December 31. When a promotion ends you only lose the bonus points, not the elite credit.

What if I miss by a few nights?

Don’t plan on leniency. Marriott’s one-tier soft landing in early 2026 was a policy, not a promise for next year, and no program guarantees it. A small gap is usually far cheaper to close in November than a year of lost benefits.

A Quick Checklist to Keep Elite Status

  1. Open your program’s app and note your nights, plus stays and spend for Hilton, base points for Hyatt or qualifying points for IHG.
  2. Decide which tier is actually worth keeping for the way you will travel next year.
  3. Register for your program’s Q4 promotion.
  4. Fit any remaining trips to that promotion.
  5. If there is still a gap, compare the cost of filling it with the value of a year of benefits.
  6. Leave enough time. The last week of December is too late for most gaps.

Every situation is a little different, especially if you hold status in two programs. If you would like a second pair of eyes on your numbers, send us your counts and we will happily talk through the options with you. Or browse our Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG services at your own pace.
